Mom and I left the ER about 8 pm tonight. He was still waiting for the blood transfusion and to be admitted into a room. Not sure which was going to happen first, but either way it would be a long night for him as the blood transfusion was going to take 4 hours to complete from whenever they got it started. I am sure that once we left he was able to relax more as he didn’t have to wonder and worry about how my mother was holding up.
We will call him in the morning to find out what is going on and then go over to see him after we go to the gym. Hopefully the positive effects of the transfusion will hit him quickly and he will be feeling much better soon. Mom’s transfusion took a couple days before she started feeling better, but they are different people so it’s hard to say how his will go.
They both started to get really tired and mentally started checking out and were easily irritated. So they ended up having a two sentence argument over mom staying or leaving. Before we left we ended up in this somewhat surreal conversation about the bed dad was laying on. He was trying to explain to my mother than when they get him a room, they would put the bag with his belongings on the gurney and just wheel him up to the room. She was confused what he meant and I made the mistake of touching the railing on the bed and saying this is a gurney. She thought I mean the railing so the conversation then went on to if they would put the bag on the rail and how that would work if they lowered it. It was a strange conversation that I somehow let myself get sucked into rather than just realizing she was tired and mentally had checked out. I could have done without the last 5 minutes we were there. Mom annoyed, Dad getting emotional, and me wondering what the hell was going on.
We got home and mom dozed off, then the oxygen deliver guy shows up at 10 pm. What in the heck they were doing delivering that late is beyond me. The guy still had two more deliveries after us. Anyway, the deal with the oxygen is this… I took dad yesterday to get his oxygen saturation checked (look at yesterday’s post for info on that). The pulmonary specialist reviewed the test results and called this morning to say that he had ordered oxygen for dad and that it should come sometime today. He was also supposed to go back to the respiratory center for more tests today, but those plans were changed when we took him to the ER. While we were at the ER, a lady from the doctor called wanting to know what she should do about the oxygen order since dad was in the ER. I told her that someone was at home for the deliver. They said that they don’t normally send out oxygen if someone is going to be admitted to the hospital (I don’t know why) and asked if he was going to be admitted. At that time we did not know the answer to that so I told her that I didn’t know. She hung up. A little bit later one of the ER nurses brings a phone into the room and hands it to me saying it was some lady about oxygen. I told her again that we didn’t know if he would be admitted and she could either deliver it or not. So when it hadn’t come by the time we got home, I figured it wasn’t going to. Mom was saying that he probably wouldn’t need it when he gets out of the hospital, but I told her it’s better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it.
So we have oxygen here if anyone wants to party!
Well I think that sums up the day. We shall see what fun stuff tomorrow brings!
