My sister came to visit for a couple of days on February 16th. Also that same day, Larry and Diana (my mother’s nephew and his wife) and David (my mother’s grand-nephew) came to visit. Having family come to visit really made my parents happy. Although mom was really tired and fought hard to stay awake, she really enjoyed having the company. I had planned to have pulled pork sandwiches for dinner that night (remember I am now the chef as well), the visitor’s weren’t exactly planned so I had several more mouths to cook for that night. I went ahead with the pulled pork idea, but added salad, a pasta dish and some veggies to the meal and for the first time since Thanksgiving we had a proper sit down meal. It was great fun. The next morning we went out to breakfast and Larry, Diana and David parted ways after breakfast. Jodi stayed until the following Wednesday morning. Jodi was a big help while she was here. She took care of some of the more urgent gardening needs, helped mom setup an appointment for a wig and helped me with the dishes after meals. She also spent a half a day cleaning all the little trinkets and things my mother has in the bay window in the living room. It was sad to see her leave, but she is going to be back in the middle of March.
Later that week, I took my mother to pick out a wig and color and get it ordered. Her hair has not fallen out yet, but she wanted to have it ready in case it did fall out. The gal at the wig store was very nice and patient. You could tell she has been working with chemo patients for a long time. She gave me mother a good deal on a wig. I just hope that it turns out the way my mother wants it to. She is so particular about her hair. Always has been. I realize now that I forgot to mention something in a previous post. I was about to say that my mother will look kinda silly with no hair and a quarter sized hole in her head, but then realized no one would understand that reference. Back in January some time, my mother had a growth cut off from her scalp. It left a quarter sized hole in her head that she will have forever. I don’t know why they couldn’t have stitched it together, but oh well. It looks like a volcano crater. Turned out it was also squamous cell cancer.
We are nearly caught up to present day. The past several posts have just been the highlights and things I could remember. The tone of the posts will change once I get to doing them the day things happen. They will change from highlights to more detailed events. A lot of it might bore the heck out of people reading this, but I am not only writing for the readers. I am also writing for myself, so that I can remember the things that happened, how each of us was feeling and so forth.
The next post will pick up from February 25th and will be daily from there.
