My father was the first to be diagnosed with lung cancer. The events that lead up to his diagnosis started out by accident. My mother went to have a chest xray done for her yearly physical early in 2013 and my father figured it had been a while since he had one so he asked if they could kill two birds with one stone. While my mother’s xray was unremarkable (for those without a medical background the term unremarkable is good, its like a negative test result) that was not the case for my father. His chest was almost all white. The doctor asked if he was having any problems breathing, to which he replied “Nope”. Well it turned out my father had walking pneumonia. So the doctor ordered a cycle of antibiotics and that was the end of it… so we thought. A couple months later dad had another chest xray to ensure the walking pneumonia was cleared up. The xray showed a suspicious spot on the lung and the doctor ordered a CT scan to get a better view of it. The results came back that it was likely a tumor. This was late September. Dad next went in for a biopsy to find out what kind of tumor it was, the result of that biopsy confirmed the worst. Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.
